Bentley Postpones First Electric Vehicle Release to 2026

Bentley has shifted the timeline for launching its first all-electric vehicle (EV) to 2026, a year later than initially planned. This strategic delay, part of its Beyond100 initiative, aims to perfect the V8 plug-in hybrid system for its upcoming hybrid models. The luxury car maker’s first EV will feature the innovative PPE architecture from Volkswagen, marking a significant step into the electric market with a brand new model.

CEO Adrian Hallmark emphasizes the importance of this move, indicating that the decision to launch a new model rather than converting the existing Bentayga SUV into an EV underscores the brand’s cautious yet forward-thinking approach. This decision aligns with Bentley’s substantial $2.5 billion investment in its Crewe manufacturing plant, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable luxury automotive innovation over the next decade.

Despite the EV launch delay, Bentley plans to use this time wisely by enhancing its autonomous driving technology. This includes refining a low-speed driving assistant and introducing a wheel-curb avoidance system, ensuring that when the EV arrives, it does so with the latest in automotive tech. Furthermore, Bentley is set to expand its high-performance lineup with a new plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) that features a potent V8 engine, marking the transition from its iconic W12 engines.

Looking ahead, Bentley is preparing updates for its Continental GT, GTC, and Flying Spur models, aiming to incorporate new hybrid powertrains as it gradually phases out the V8 and W12 engines. The Bentayga will maintain its 550hp, 4.0-liter V8 engine until 2026, with the V6 PHEV offerings also continuing. Through these developments, Bentley not only reaffirms its luxury pedigree but also embraces the evolving landscape of the automotive industry, balancing heritage with innovation.
