Maersk recently celebrated the opening of its brand-new warehouse in Sri Lanka, located in Wattala and sprawling across 100,000 square feet. Among those present at the event were Vikash Agarwal, who serves as the Managing Director of Maersk South Asia, Biju Ravi, the Head of Maersk Sri Lanka, and Dr. Parakrama Dissanayake, who holds the position of Deputy Chairman & Managing Director at Aitken Spence PLC. These notable figures were joined by other leaders in the industry. This warehouse marks a significant step in Maersk’s dedication to providing comprehensive supply chain solutions, a move that promises strategic advantages for both global clients and local suppliers in the retail and lifestyle sectors.
Strategically positioned just 11 kilometers away from the seaport, the new facility in Wattala capitalizes on Sri Lanka’s burgeoning status as a logistics center. Leveraging the country’s geographical advantage in connecting Asia, Africa, and Europe, Maersk aims to tap into Sri Lanka’s vibrant trade landscape and the government’s efforts to enhance infrastructure and business facilitation.
Spanning 100,000 square feet, the warehouse offers export consolidation and third-party logistics (3PL) services, with each segment allocated 50,000 square feet. Through this setup, Maersk is poised to deliver end-to-end supply chain solutions, encompassing storage, inventory management, and distribution, catering to both local and international clientele. The 3PL aspect allows suppliers to streamline cargo storage and swift movement to consolidation points, ensuring efficient operations. Moreover, the proximity of Maersk’s adjacent empty yard facilitates rapid container movement, expediting the process from consolidation to port, thereby serving the Colombo market within a four-hour timeframe.
In addition to its functional aspects, the facility prioritizes environmental sustainability, incorporating features such as rainwater harvesting, LED lighting, and compatibility with solar modules. This underscores Maersk’s commitment to eco-friendly operations, aligning with contemporary concerns for environmental stewardship.
In conclusion, Maersk’s new warehouse in Sri Lanka signifies not only a strategic business move but also a testament to the company’s commitment to sustainable growth and development. By harnessing Sri Lanka’s logistical advantages and investing in state-of-the-art infrastructure, Maersk is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the country’s trade landscape while delivering unparalleled value to its clients.
