Researchers Discover Additional Cognitive Benefits Linked to Video Games

Recent research published in the British Journal of Psychology sheds light on the cognitive benefits enjoyed by regular video game players. The study conducted at the Lero Esports Science Research Lab at the University of Limerick enlisted the participation of 88 young adults. Among them, half were categorized as frequent gamers, spending more than seven hours per week engaged in action-based video games.

Participants underwent cognitive performance tests, including tasks assessing attention, memory, executive function, and visuospatial memory. The results revealed that regular gamers outperformed non-gamers in completing tasks related to attention and memory by 12.7% and 17.4%, respectively.

Dr. Adam Toth of University of Limerick and Lero, one of the study’s authors, highlighted the positive implications of the findings. He noted that contrary to common criticism, regular gaming may offer cognitive benefits, particularly in attentiveness and memory. Dr. Mark Campbell, Director of the Lero Esports Science Research Lab, emphasized the relevance of these findings in fields requiring high cognitive performance, such as surgery and air traffic control.

Additionally, the study explored whether gamers are less susceptible to cognitive fatigue—a decline in performance over time. Both gamers and non-gamers exhibited similar rates of cognitive fatigue when subjected to prolonged concentration tasks, indicating no significant difference in their susceptibility to cognitive decline.

These findings challenge the negative stereotypes associated with gaming and underscore its potential as a tool for enhancing cognitive abilities. As research in this field continues to evolve, it may provide valuable insights into leveraging video games to improve cognitive performance in various professional domains.
