Amazon Continues ‘Just Walk Out’ Technology in UK Amid US Changes

Amazon is transitioning away from its Just Walk Out technology in its Amazon Fresh grocery stores, signaling a strategic shift toward smart carts that offer real-time spending visibility for customers. This move is part of a larger strategy to revamp the shopping experience in response to consumer demand for greater transparency and convenience while shopping. The smart carts aim to retain the benefit of queue-free checkout while adding the advantage of tracking purchases as they happen.

The introduction of Just Walk Out technology was initially seen as a game-changer for the grocery industry, aiming to streamline the shopping process. However, Amazon has encountered obstacles in fully realizing this vision within its physical retail operations. Feedback and performance assessments have led to the closure of some Amazon Fresh and Go stores that did not meet expectations.

In 2023, under the leadership of CEO Andy Jassy, Amazon undertook a critical evaluation of its grocery strategy. This led to a pause in the expansion of Fresh stores and a focus on refining the business model to better align with market demands and customer preferences. The company has since reopened three Fresh stores in Los Angeles with an updated approach, prioritizing selective new openings and significant remodels of existing stores to enhance the overall shopping experience.

While Just Walk Out technology is being scaled back in the U.S. Fresh stores, it will continue to feature in Amazon Go locations and some smaller Fresh outlets in the U.K. Amazon also plans to keep offering this technology to third-party retailers, maintaining its presence in the automated shopping technology market. This recalibration reflects Amazon’s adaptive strategy in the evolving retail landscape, balancing innovation with customer satisfaction.
